Post-Stroke Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PS-PTSD)
Tips from survivors: “Talking about what happened helped me stop reliving it alone.”
What it is
A form of post-traumatic stress that can develop after experiencing a stroke.
How it shows up
Intrusive memories of the stroke event, anxiety about health, nightmares, avoiding reminders of hospitals or medical situations, and feeling constantly on edge.
Why it happens
A stroke is often sudden, life-threatening, and frightening. The brain can process the experience as trauma, leading to PTSD symptoms.
How common
Not rare—research suggests a meaningful percentage of stroke survivors develop PTSD symptoms during recovery.
Possible management
Trauma-informed therapy, counseling, support groups, stress-management techniques, and medication when appropriate.
