Quadrantanopia

Tips from survivors: “I train myself to scan the area I can’t see so I don’t miss things.”

What it is

Loss of vision in one quarter of the visual field.

How it shows up

Missing part of what you see in the upper or lower corner of your vision, which can make reading, navigating spaces, or noticing objects difficult.

Why it happens

Stroke damages specific parts of the brain’s visual pathways, often in the occipital or temporal lobes.

How common

Less common than full visual field loss (hemianopia), but occurs depending on the location of the stroke.

Possible management

Vision therapy, scanning strategies, occupational therapy, and using visual cues to compensate for the missing field.
