Pseudobulbar Affect

What it is
A neurological condition that causes sudden, uncontrollable episodes of laughing or crying.
How it shows up
Emotional outbursts that may not match how a person actually feels—for example, crying or laughing unexpectedly or more intensely than the situation warrants.
Why it happens
Stroke disrupts the brain pathways that regulate emotional expression, particularly the connections between the brain’s emotional centers and control regions.
How common
Possible management
Medications, emotional awareness strategies, education for family and caregivers, and supportive communication.
Relatively common after stroke and other neurological conditions.
