Prosopagnosia
Tips from survivors: “I focus on someone’s voice or how they move—that’s how I recognize them now.”
What it is
Difficulty recognizing faces, sometimes called “face blindness.”
How it shows up
Trouble identifying familiar people by their face, including friends, family, or even one’s own reflection, often relying on voices, clothing, or context instead.
Why it happens
Stroke affects brain regions involved in facial recognition, particularly areas in the temporal or occipital lobes.
How common
Possible management
Using alternative cues such as voice, hairstyle, clothing, or context, along with cognitive and occupational therapy strategies.
Rare, but documented in some stroke survivors depending on the location of brain injury.
