Post-Stroke Apathy
Tips from survivors: “Even when I don’t feel motivated, starting with one small task helps get me moving.”
What it is
A lack of motivation, interest, or initiative that develops after a stroke.
How it shows up
Reduced drive to start activities, less interest in hobbies or social interaction, and needing reminders or encouragement to begin tasks.
Why it happens
Stroke can affect brain regions involved in motivation and goal-directed behavior, particularly in the frontal lobes and their connections.
How common
Possible management
Structured routines, setting small achievable goals, behavioral activation strategies, and support from caregivers or therapists.
Relatively common after stroke, though it is sometimes mistaken for depression.
