What it is

A progressive decline in memory, thinking, and daily functioning that develops after a stroke.

How it shows up

Confusion, difficulty learning new information, memory loss, trouble planning or making decisions, and reduced independence in daily activities.

Why it happens

Stroke damages brain tissue and can disrupt blood flow to areas responsible for cognition, increasing the risk of vascular dementia.

How common
Possible management

Cognitive rehabilitation, structured routines, memory aids, caregiver support, and dementia care services.

Around 10–30% of stroke survivors develop some degree of post-stroke dementia.
