Neuropathic Pain
Tips from survivors: “The pain is real, but finding the right treatment plan made it more manageable.”
What it is
Pain caused by damage to the brain or nervous system after a stroke.
How it shows up
Burning, stabbing, tingling, or electric-like sensations, often affecting the side of the body impacted by the stroke.
Why it happens
Stroke disrupts the brain’s pain-processing pathways, causing normal sensory signals to be interpreted as pain.
How common
Possible management
Pain medications (such as certain antidepressants or anticonvulsants), physical therapy, and specialized pain management strategies.
Less common than weakness or fatigue, but can occur in some stroke survivors, especially with sensory pathway involvement.
