What it is

Sudden, brief, involuntary muscle jerks.

How it shows up

Quick twitching or jerking movements in a muscle or group of muscles, sometimes triggered by movement, sound, or without warning.

Why it happens

Stroke can disrupt the brain’s motor control circuits, leading to abnormal signals that cause sudden muscle contractions.

How common
Possible management

Medications, neurological evaluation, and strategies to reduce triggers if they are identified.

Uncommon, but documented in some stroke survivors depending on the location of brain injury.
