Muscle Atrophy
Tips from survivors: “Using the weak muscles—even a little each day—helped keep them from fading away.”
What it is
Loss of muscle mass and strength over time.
How it shows up
Muscles becoming smaller or weaker, reduced endurance, and increased difficulty performing physical tasks.
Why it happens
After a stroke, reduced movement or prolonged inactivity can cause muscles to weaken and shrink.
How common
Possible management
Physical therapy, strengthening exercises, regular movement, and incorporating the affected limb into daily activities.
Fairly common, especially when limbs are not used regularly during recovery.
