What it is

A persistent feeling of sadness, loss of interest, or low mood after stroke.

How it shows up

Lack of motivation, withdrawal, changes in sleep or appetite, feelings of hopelessness, or loss of enjoyment in things once valued.

Why it happens

Stroke affects brain chemistry and emotional regulation, combined with the life changes and challenges of recovery.

How common

Very common—affecting up to 30–50% of stroke survivors.

Possible management

Counseling or therapy, medication when appropriate, structured routines, physical activity, and peer support.
