Loss of Proprioception

Tips from survivors: “I watch my limbs when I move—my eyes help replace the feeling I lost.”

What it is

Reduced or lost ability to sense the position and movement of parts of the body.

How it shows up

Difficulty knowing where a limb is without looking, clumsy movements, trouble with balance, or misjudging how far to move an arm or leg.

Why it happens

Stroke damages the sensory pathways in the brain that process proprioceptive signals from muscles and joints.

How common
Possible management

Physical and occupational therapy, proprioceptive training, visual cues, and repetitive movement practice.

Can occur in strokes affecting sensory processing areas, particularly in the parietal lobe.
