What it is
Difficulty distinguishing between the left and right sides of the body or space.
How it shows up
Trouble following directions like “turn left,” putting the wrong shoe on the wrong foot, or hesitating when asked to move a specific side of the body.
Why it happens
Stroke affects areas of the parietal lobe responsible for spatial awareness and body orientation.
How common
Possible management
Visual cues, labeling strategies (like marking shoes or hands), occupational therapy, and repetitive practice.
Uncommon on its own, but often occurs as part of other conditions such as Gerstmann syndrome.
