What it is

A sudden and severe change in mental state, causing confusion and reduced awareness of surroundings.

How it shows up

Disorientation, trouble focusing, hallucinations, agitation, or rapid changes in alertness (especially worse at night).

Why it happens

Stroke, infections, medications, or hospitalization can disrupt normal brain function, leading to temporary confusion.

How common

Can occur in the early stages after stroke, particularly in hospital settings or with complications.

Possible management

Treating underlying causes, maintaining a calm and familiar environment, ensuring proper sleep, hydration, and orientation cues.
