Hypotonia
Tips from survivors: “Even when it felt floppy, I kept moving it—slowly strength started to come back.”
What it is
Decreased muscle tone, causing muscles to feel weak or floppy.
How it shows up
Limbs may feel heavy or difficult to control, reduced resistance to movement, and trouble maintaining posture or stability.
Why it happens
Stroke disrupts the brain’s signals to muscles, reducing normal muscle tone and control.
How common
Common in the early stages after stroke, sometimes progressing to increased tone (spasticity) later on.
Possible management
Physical therapy, strengthening exercises, supportive positioning, and movement practice.
