Hemispatial Neglect
Tips from survivors: “I remind myself to look left—otherwise I miss half the world.”
What it is
A lack of awareness of one side of space or the body, most often the left side.
How it shows up
Ignoring objects, people, or even one side of your own body; eating food from only one side of the plate; bumping into things on one side.
Why it happens
Stroke affects the brain’s spatial awareness networks, usually in the right parietal lobe.
How common
Fairly common in right-hemisphere strokes.
Possible management
Visual scanning training, occupational therapy, using cues (like bright markers), and structured routines.
