Foot Drop
Tips from survivors: “The brace made walking safer while I worked on strengthening my leg.”
What it is
Difficulty lifting the front part of the foot, causing it to drag while walking.
How it shows up
Toes catching the ground, a “slapping” foot when walking, or needing to lift the knee higher (steppage gait) to avoid tripping.
Why it happens
Stroke affects the nerves and muscles that control ankle and foot movement, particularly dorsiflexion.
How common
Common in strokes affecting motor pathways in the leg.
Possible management
Physical therapy, ankle-foot orthosis (AFO), strengthening exercises, and gait training.
