Fatigue (Post-Stroke Fatigue)
Tips from survivors: “I treat my energy like a budget—once it’s spent, I rest.”
What it is
A persistent and overwhelming sense of tiredness that isn’t proportional to activity and doesn’t fully improve with rest.
How it shows up
Feeling exhausted after simple tasks, needing frequent breaks, difficulty concentrating, or “hitting a wall” suddenly.
Why it happens
The brain is working harder to heal and reroute functions after stroke, and factors like sleep disruption, medications, and cognitive effort can contribute.
How common
Very common—affecting up to 70% of stroke survivors.
Possible management
Energy pacing, prioritizing tasks, scheduled rest, managing sleep, and gradually building endurance.
