What it is
Weakness or paralysis of the muscles on one side of the face.
How it shows up
One side of the face may sag, the smile may appear uneven, and there may be difficulty closing one eye or controlling facial expressions.
Why it happens
Stroke disrupts the nerves and brain signals that control facial muscles, often affecting one side of the body.
How common
Very common and often one of the earliest visible signs of stroke.
Possible management
Facial exercises, speech therapy, muscle stimulation, and time as the brain heals.
