What it is

Difficulty swallowing food, liquids, or saliva safely.

How it shows up

Coughing or choking while eating or drinking, feeling like food is stuck, drooling, or frequent throat clearing.

Why it happens

Stroke affects the muscles and coordination needed for swallowing, or the brain’s control of those muscles.

How common
Possible management

Speech-language therapy, swallowing assessments, modified diets (e.g., soft foods, thickened liquids), and safe eating techniques.

Very common, especially in the early stages after stroke.
