Alice in Wonderland Syndrome

Tips from survivors: “When it happens, I pause and focus on something familiar until my perception settles.”

What it is

A neurological condition that alters how a person perceives size, distance, or the shape of objects or their own body.

How it shows up

Objects or body parts may appear unusually large, small, closer, or farther away than they actually are. These visual distortions can feel strange or disorienting.

Why it happens

Stroke can affect brain regions involved in visual perception and spatial processing, particularly in the occipital or temporal lobes.

How common

Rare, but documented in some neurological conditions, including stroke.

Possible management

Medical evaluation, managing underlying neurological changes, and reassurance that the perception changes are temporary or episodic.
