Urinary Retention
Tips from survivors: “Taking my time and relaxing helped my body relearn how to empty my bladder.”
What it is
Difficulty emptying the bladder completely.
How it shows up
Trouble starting urination, a weak stream, feeling like the bladder is still full after going, or needing to urinate frequently in small amounts.
Why it happens
Stroke can disrupt the brain signals that control the coordination of bladder muscles needed to release urine.
How common
Less common than urinary urgency or incontinence, but can occur in some stroke survivors.
Possible management
Bladder training, medical evaluation, catheterization when necessary, medications, and monitoring fluid intake.
