What it is
Difficulty understanding and interpreting social cues, emotions, and interactions.
How it shows up
Trouble reading facial expressions, tone of voice, or body language, misunderstanding jokes or sarcasm, or responding in ways that seem socially inappropriate.
Why it happens
Stroke can affect brain regions involved in emotional processing and social awareness, particularly in the frontal and temporal lobes.
How common
Less commonly recognized, but reported by some stroke survivors depending on the location of the stroke.
Possible management
Cognitive therapy, social skills training, structured feedback from others, and practicing communication strategies.
