Xerostomia (Dry Mouth)

What it is

A condition where the mouth does not produce enough saliva.

How it shows up

A dry or sticky feeling in the mouth, difficulty swallowing or speaking, cracked lips, or increased thirst.

Why it happens

Stroke can affect the nerves that control saliva production, and certain medications used after stroke can also reduce saliva.

How common

Reported by some stroke survivors, especially those taking medications that affect saliva production.

Possible management

Staying well hydrated, using saliva substitutes or mouth-moisturizing products, chewing sugar-free gum, and maintaining good oral hygiene.
