What it is
Difficulty recalling or producing the correct word during speech.
How it shows up
Pausing mid-sentence, using vague words like “thing” or “that,” or knowing what you want to say but being unable to retrieve the specific word.
Why it happens
Stroke can affect the brain’s language centers, particularly areas involved in word retrieval and speech production.
How common
Very common after stroke, especially in survivors with aphasia or language processing changes.
Possible management
Speech-language therapy, word-retrieval exercises, pacing conversations, and using descriptive strategies when a word is difficult to recall.
