What it is

Reduced ability to firmly grasp or hold objects.

How it shows up

Difficulty opening jars, holding utensils, turning doorknobs, or carrying items without dropping them.

Why it happens

Stroke can weaken the muscles of the hand and fingers or disrupt the brain signals that control grip.

How common
Possible management

Occupational therapy, hand-strengthening exercises, repetitive practice with grasping tasks, and adaptive tools for daily activities.

Common after stroke, especially when the arm or hand on one side of the body is affected.
