Hypoesthesia
Tips from survivors: “Even when sensation is reduced, regularly touching and moving the area helps the brain reconnect.”
What it is
Reduced sensitivity to touch or other sensations.
How it shows up
Areas of the body may feel dull, less responsive to touch, or less able to detect pain, pressure, or temperature.
Why it happens
Stroke damages sensory pathways in the brain that normally process signals from the body.
How common
Common after stroke when sensory processing regions of the brain are affected.
Possible management
Sensory retraining, physical and occupational therapy, and protecting affected areas from injury due to reduced sensation.
