Visual Hallucinations
Tips from survivors: “Knowing it was my brain creating the image helped me stay calm when it happened.”
What it is
Seeing images or scenes that are not actually present.
How it shows up
Seeing people, shapes, lights, patterns, or objects that others do not see. These images can appear briefly or last longer and may seem very real.
Why it happens
Stroke can affect the brain’s visual processing regions, causing the brain to generate images without actual visual input.
How common
Uncommon, but documented in some stroke survivors depending on the location of the brain injury.
Possible management
Medical evaluation, managing underlying neurological causes, reassurance, and maintaining a calm, well-lit environment.
