Visual Neglect
Tips from survivors: “I remind myself to look toward my weaker side so I don’t miss half the world.”
What it is
A lack of awareness of visual information on one side of space.
How it shows up
Ignoring objects, people, or parts of the environment on one side, even though the eyes can physically see. For example, eating food from only half the plate or missing items on one side of a page.
Why it happens
Stroke affects brain areas responsible for spatial attention and awareness, often in the right parietal lobe.
How common
Fairly common in right-hemisphere strokes.
Possible management
Visual scanning training, occupational therapy, using cues or reminders to check the affected side, and structured routines.
