Visual Field Loss
Tips from survivors: “I remind myself to scan the area I can’t see so I don’t miss things.”
What it is
Loss of part of the normal field of vision.
How it shows up
Missing areas in vision—such as the left or right side—making it difficult to read, navigate spaces, or notice objects and people on the affected side.
Why it happens
Stroke damages the brain’s visual pathways, often involving the occipital lobe or connecting visual processing regions.
How common
Fairly common in strokes affecting the visual system.
Possible management
Vision therapy, visual scanning techniques, occupational therapy, and using visual cues or reminders to check the affected side.
