Visual Agnosia
Tips from survivors: “Sometimes I have to pick something up or hear its name before my brain understands what I’m seeing.”
What it is
Difficulty recognizing objects or images even though vision itself is intact.
How it shows up
Being able to see an object clearly but not recognizing what it is until touching it or hearing it described.
Why it happens
Stroke affects brain areas responsible for visual processing and object recognition, often in the occipital or temporal lobes.
How common
Rare, but documented in some stroke survivors depending on the location of the brain injury.
Possible management
Occupational therapy, using other senses like touch or sound for identification, and practicing recognition strategies.
