Urinary Urgency

Tips from survivors: “I follow a bathroom schedule instead of waiting for the urge—it helps prevent accidents.”

A sudden, strong need to urinate that can be difficult to control.

How it shows up

Feeling an urgent need to reach the bathroom quickly, frequent bathroom trips, or difficulty holding urine long enough to get to the toilet.

Why it happens

Stroke can disrupt the brain signals that regulate bladder control and the timing of urination.

How common

Fairly common after stroke, especially during the early stages of recovery.

Possible management

Bladder training, scheduled bathroom routines, pelvic floor exercises, and medical guidance if symptoms persist.
