What it is

How it shows up

Reduced strength in the arm, leg, or face on one side, making movements slower, harder, or less controlled.

Why it happens

Stroke disrupts the brain signals that control muscle movement on one side of the body.

How common

Very common and one of the most recognizable effects of stroke.

Possible management

Physical and occupational therapy, strengthening exercises, task-specific training, and assistive devices if needed.
