What it is

Difficulty swallowing food, liquids, or saliva safely.

How it shows up

Coughing or choking when eating or drinking, food feeling stuck in the throat, drooling, or needing extra time to swallow.

Why it happens

Stroke can disrupt the brain’s control of the muscles involved in swallowing.

How common

Very common after stroke, especially in the early stages of recovery.

Possible management

Swallowing assessments, speech-language therapy, modified diets (such as softer foods or thickened liquids), and learning safe swallowing techniques.
