How it shows up
Hearing sounds such as ringing, buzzing, clicking, or hissing that are not coming from an external source.
Why it happens
Stroke can affect the brain’s auditory pathways or blood flow related to hearing, leading to abnormal sound perception.
How common
Uncommon, but reported in some stroke survivors depending on the location of the brain injury.
Possible management
Hearing evaluations, sound therapy, stress management, and strategies to mask the noise such as background sounds.
