Spasticity
Tips from survivors: “Regular stretching helps keep the stiffness from taking over my movement.”
What it is
Increased muscle tone that causes muscles to become tight or stiff.
How it shows up
Muscles may feel rigid, limbs may resist movement, and certain muscles may contract involuntarily, sometimes causing abnormal postures.
Why it happens
Stroke disrupts the brain signals that normally control muscle tone and movement, causing muscles to remain partially contracted.
How common
Common after stroke, particularly in survivors with motor pathway involvement.
Possible management
Physical therapy, stretching routines, splints or braces, medications, and in some cases injections to reduce muscle tightness.
