What it is
Difficulty reading or understanding written text after a stroke.
How it shows up
Words may appear confusing, letters may seem scrambled, or reading may feel slow and exhausting. Some people may struggle to understand written sentences or follow lines of text.
Why it happens
Stroke can affect the brain’s language and visual processing areas responsible for recognizing and interpreting written words.
How common
Fairly common, especially in survivors who experience aphasia or visual processing changes.
Possible management
Speech-language therapy, reading retraining exercises, using larger text or guides while reading, and practicing with simple material.
