Quadriplegia

Tips from survivors: “Progress may be slow, but every small improvement is a step forward.”

What it is

Paralysis affecting all four limbs—both arms and both legs.

How it shows up

Loss of voluntary movement in the arms and legs, often accompanied by difficulty with mobility, daily tasks, and sometimes breathing or swallowing depending on severity.

Why it happens

Stroke disrupts the brain pathways that control movement across the body, particularly when major motor pathways or the brainstem are affected.

How common

Rare in stroke compared to paralysis affecting one side of the body, but possible in severe cases.

Possible management

Intensive rehabilitation, physical and occupational therapy, mobility aids, assistive technologies, and long-term supportive care.
