Cortical Blindness

Tips from survivors: “I rely more on touch and routine — it helps me navigate safely.”

What it is

Loss of vision caused by damage to the brain’s visual processing areas, rather than the eyes themselves.

How it shows up

Partial or complete vision loss, despite the eyes being physically healthy. Some people may not realize they can’t see (lack of awareness).

Why it happens

Stroke affects the occipital lobes, which are responsible for interpreting visual information.

How common

Rare, but can occur in strokes affecting the visual cortex.

Possible management

Vision rehabilitation, compensatory strategies, and support for safety and daily living.
