Apraxia of Speech

Tips from survivors: “Slowing down and saying one word at a time helped me get the sounds out.”

What it is

A motor speech disorder where the brain has difficulty planning and coordinating the movements needed for speech.

How it shows up

Words may come out incorrectly, inconsistently, or with effort. You may know exactly what you want to say but struggle to get the sounds out.

Why it happens

Stroke disrupts the brain pathways responsible for planning speech movements, even though the muscles themselves are not weak.

How common

Less common than aphasia or dysarthria, but often occurs alongside them.

Possible management

Speech-language therapy focused on repetition, sound practice, and motor planning strategies.
