Paraesthesia
Lived experience: “No light touching or contact.”
What it is
Abnormal sensations in the body without an obvious physical cause.
How it shows up
Tingling, “pins and needles,” crawling, prickling, or buzzing sensations, often affecting the arms, hands, legs, or feet.
Why it happens
Stroke can disrupt the brain’s sensory pathways, causing the brain to misinterpret nerve signals from the body.
Possible management
Sensory retraining, physical therapy, gentle stimulation
of the affected area, and medical evaluation if symptoms
are persistent.
How common
Fairly common in stroke survivors, especially when sensory areas of the brain are affected.
