What it is
A difficulty maintaining focus on a task or goal, even when the person understands what they are supposed to do.
How it shows up
Starting a task but not completing it, getting distracted mid-task, or forgetting the overall objective despite knowing the individual steps.
Why it happens
Stroke affects the brain’s executive function networks, particularly in the frontal lobes, which are responsible for planning and goal-directed behavior.
How common
Less commonly recognized, but can occur in strokes affecting attention and executive function.
Possible management
Breaking tasks into clear steps, using written or visual reminders, structured routines, and cognitive therapy.
