Global Aphasia

What it is

A severe form of aphasia that affects both understanding and expression of language.

How it shows up

Difficulty speaking, understanding, reading, and writing. Communication may be limited to a few words, sounds, or gestures.

Why it happens

Stroke causes widespread damage to language areas in the brain, typically in the left hemisphere.

How common

Less common than milder forms of aphasia, but occurs in more severe strokes.

Possible management

Intensive speech-language therapy, alternative communication methods (gestures, pictures, communication boards), and supportive communication from others.
