Reduplicative Paramnesia
“When people calmly reminded me where I was and showed me familiar things around me, it helped my brain settle.”
What it is
A rare condition where a person believes that a place, location, or environment has been duplicated or exists in more than one place at the same time.
How it shows up
A person may insist that a hospital, home, or room is actually located somewhere else, or believe they are in a familiar place when they are not. They may confidently describe the same location as existing in multiple places.
Why it happens
Stroke can damage brain regions involved in spatial awareness, memory, and reality monitoring—often affecting the right hemisphere or frontal lobes.
How common
Very rare, but documented in some neurological conditions including stroke and traumatic brain injury.
Possible management
Medical and neurological evaluation, supportive reassurance, cognitive rehabilitation, and maintaining a stable and familiar environment.
