What it is
Weakness of the muscles involved in speaking, swallowing, and facial movement.
How it shows up
Slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, drooling, weak voice, or trouble controlling facial expressions.
Why it happens
Stroke affects the cranial nerves or brainstem pathways that control the muscles of the face, throat, and tongue.
How common
Can occur depending on stroke location, particularly with brainstem involvement.
Possible management
Speech-language therapy, swallowing assessments, dietary modifications, and exercises to strengthen muscles.
