Body Awareness Deficits
Tips from survivors: “I watch my body while I move — my eyes help guide what I can’t feel.”
What it is
Difficulty sensing or recognizing the position, movement, or existence of parts of the body.
How it shows up
Feeling like a limb isn’t there, misjudging where your arm or leg is, bumping into things, or having trouble coordinating movements.
Why it happens
Stroke affects areas of the brain responsible for proprioception and spatial awareness, often in the parietal lobe.
How common
Fairly common, especially in strokes affecting sensory or spatial processing regions.
Possible management
Occupational and physical therapy, sensory retraining, visual cues, and repetitive movement exercises.
