What it is
A lack of motivation, interest, or emotional engagement.
How it shows up
Feeling indifferent, not initiating activities, reduced interest in things that once mattered, or needing prompts to get started.
Why it happens
Stroke can affect brain regions involved in motivation and goal-directed behavior, particularly the frontal lobes and their connections.
How common
Relatively common after stroke, but often mistaken for depression.
Possible management
Structured routines, setting small achievable goals, behavioral activation, and support from caregivers or therapists.
