What it is

A loss or impairment of the ability to write.

How it shows up

Difficulty forming letters, spelling words, or organizing thoughts on paper. Writing may become slow, illegible, or frustrating.

Why it happens

Stroke damages areas of the brain involved in language processing and motor control needed for writing.

How common
Possible management

Speech-language therapy, occupational therapy, practicing writing exercises, and using assistive tools like typing or voice-to-text.

Often occurs alongside aphasia, but can also appear on its own depending on the stroke location.
