Ageusia (Loss of Taste)

Tips from survivors: “I focus on texture and temperature now — crunch and warmth make meals more enjoyable.”

What it is

A loss or significant reduction in the ability to taste.

How it shows up

Food may taste bland, muted, or like nothing at all. Some people may still sense texture but not flavor.

Why it happens

Stroke can affect areas of the brain responsible for processing taste signals, or the nerves involved in taste perception.

How common
Possible management

Trying stronger flavors or spices (as tolerated), focusing on texture and temperature, and working with a dietitian if appetite is affected.

Less common than other sensory changes, but reported by some stroke survivors.
